Puerto Rico’s Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO) has launched an islandwide inspection campaign to ensure that scales used in Veterinary clinics are properly calibrated and certified. The initiative, led by DACO’s Weights and Measures Division, is designed to protect consumers by verifying that animal weights used in Veterinary care are measured accurately. According to Secretary Hiram Torres Montalvo, the inspections are the first focused effort targeting Veterinary clinics in more than 20 years and support the government’s broader consumer protection goals.
Inspectors will be accompanied by Compliance and Commercial Liaison Office personnel, who will provide guidance on certification requirements and regulatory compliance. Under Puerto Rico’s Weights and Measures Regulation No. 9219, commercial scales must be inspected every two years, with businesses responsible for requesting inspections. Puerto Rico has approximately 200 Veterinary clinics and animal care centers, and an estimated one in three households owns a pet, highlighting the importance of accurate weighing equipment in Veterinary care.
