The U.S. Postal Service is urging pet owners to secure their dogs as summer mail deliveries increase and dog-bite incidents remain a significant safety concern for mail carriers. Denver ranked third in the nation in 2025 with 45 reported dog bites involving postal workers, behind only Los Angeles and Dallas. Nationally, more than 5,200 postal employees were bitten by dogs last year.

As part of Dog Bite Prevention Month, USPS highlighted the risks carriers face, noting that even friendly family pets can react unpredictably when approached by someone in uniform. Mail carriers use safety measures such as air horns and electronic scanners that alert them to addresses with known dog hazards. Denver carrier Tianna Trujillo shared her own experience of being bitten after a dog unexpectedly opened a door and attacked her.

USPS officials emphasized that responsible pet ownership can help prevent injuries. Keeping dogs secured during mail delivery protects carriers, reduces service disruptions, anad helps ensure safe interactions between pets and delivery personnel.
