Officials from Disney Parks recently recognized veterinarians from University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine for their role in performing a rare and complex cataract surgery on Kendi, a 27-year-old white rhinoceros at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The procedure involved removing a cataract from Kendi’s eye, an uncommon operation in rhinoceroses that required specialized veterinary expertise.
Following the surgery, Kendi has been recovering while wearing a protective mask over her right eye. According to officials, she is doing well after the procedure.
The successful surgery highlights the collaboration between Disney’s animal care team and University of Florida veterinary specialists, as well as advances in veterinary medicine that can improve the health and quality of life of aging zoo and conservation animals. Kendi’s case is particularly notable because cataract surgery in large exotic species such as rhinoceroses is exceptionally rare and technically challenging.
