The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) released its 2026 One Health Guidelines: Emerging Concerns in Canine and Feline Parasitology on October 29, addressing evolving parasite threats affecting animals, humans, and the environment. Developed by a multidisciplinary task force, the guidelines emphasize a One Health approach to parasite prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance.

The recommendations address 12 emerging parasites of primary concern and nine additional potential threats, highlighting expanding geographic ranges, zoonotic risks, and increasing resistance to antiparasitic medications. The guidelines also emphasize responsible antiparasitic drug use, drawing parallels with antimicrobial stewardship to preserve treatment effectiveness.

Another major focus is communication among Veterinary teams, pet owners, healthcare providers, and public health officials. The guidelines provide practical strategies for discussing disease risks, improving treatment adherence, and addressing medication concerns. Ultimately, AAHA encourages individualized, multimodal parasite prevention plans that consider patient health, family circumstances, and environmental risks while strengthening collaboration across healthcare disciplines.
