Experimental GLP-1 weight loss drugs, similar to Ozempic, could one day help overweight cats, as two U.S. biotech companies begin clinical trials targeting feline obesity. Akston Biosciences is sponsoring a Cornell University study of a once weekly GLP-1 treatment, while OKAVA Pharmaceuticals is testing a long acting implant that delivers medication for up to six months. Neither treatment has been approved, but both reflect growing interest in addressing pet obesity, which affects 61% of cats and 59% of dogs evaluated by U.S. veterinarians in 2022.
Analysts believe these therapies are part of a broader shift toward “medicalization” in the $200 billion U.S. pet industry, alongside premium nutrition, diagnostics, and preventive care. Experts caution that affordability may limit widespread adoption because Veterinary care is largely paid out of pocket. Meanwhile, companies such as Nestlé Purina, Zoetis, Elanco, IDEXX, Freshpet, and Chewy continue expanding health focused products and services aimed at improving pets’ longevity and overall wellness.
