The Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 advanced significantly after passing the House of Representatives on April 30, 2026, following bipartisan approval by the House Agriculture Committee in March. The legislation strengthens rural development, conservation, agriculture, nutrition, and infrastructure programs that support counties and rural communities. Key provisions expand broadband and telehealth access, support renewable energy and childcare initiatives, modernize wildfire prevention and grazing management, and improve disaster assistance for farmers.
The bill also reauthorizes major conservation, forestry, water, and rural workforce programs while increasing support for underserved and economically distressed communities. Additional measures improve access to rural development funding and strengthen local food distribution systems. However, several provisions remain controversial, particularly those limiting state and county authority over pesticide regulations and livestock production standards. The legislation now moves to the Senate, where partisan disagreements, election-year pressures, and the approaching expiration of the 2018 Farm Bill could complicate final passage into law.
