A new Veterinary application has been demonstrated for Seracam, a portable hybrid gamma-optical imaging camera originally developed for human medicine. The technology was recently used at the Feline Hyperthyroidism Treatment Centre in Athens, Greece, to perform thyroid scintigraphy on eight cats suspected of having hyperthyroidism. Led by veterinarian Dr. Sossanna Bourmpou, the scans provided detailed images that helped assess disease severity, identify overactive thyroid tissue, and determine individualized treatment requirements.
The imaging technology is expected to improve diagnostic accuracy, optimize radioactive iodine (I-131) treatment dosing, and reduce the risk of adverse effects or repeat treatments. Dr. Bourmpou also noted that the images enhanced client communication by visually demonstrating the disease process. Serac Imaging Systems CEO Mark Rosser described the first Veterinary use of the device as an exciting milestone and said the results highlight its potential to improve patient outcomes. Additional Veterinary applications for the imaging technology are currently being evaluated.
