At the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, veterinarians conducted a comprehensive health exam on Onyx, a six-year-old Komodo dragon, offering a behind-the-scenes look at specialized zoo care. Training played a key role, as keepers conditioned Onyx to voluntarily enter a transport crate, reducing stress. Once sedated, a multidisciplinary team performed a full physical exam, including X-rays, ultrasound, endoscopy, and sample collection.
Unique challenges arose due to the dragon’s armored skin, which complicates imaging. The exam was prompted by concerns that Onyx was smaller than expected for his age. Fortunately, no major health issues were found. Instead, the team introduced dietary supplements to support growth and nutrient absorption. After recovery, Onyx quickly returned to normal activity. The case highlights the importance of proactive Veterinary care, training, and collaboration in maintaining the health and well-being of complex zoo animals.
