Residents in Leland, North Carolina are urging local officials to consider a new ordinance after an ultrasonic animal deterrent device in a neighborhood caused distress among pets. The device emits high-frequency sounds intended to repel animals, but neighbors report it frightened dogs walking nearby, with some refusing to leave their homes or pass the property. Multiple residents shared similar experiences, including dogs showing fear, confusion, and avoidance behaviors. Concerns were also raised about possible effects on children and broader community use of such devices in public spaces like restaurants or Veterinary clinics.
Local authorities stated there are currently no laws regulating these devices, limiting enforcement options. Although the homeowners association pushed for action, town officials have not yet committed to researching or implementing an ordinance. The device has since been moved indoors following community pressure, but residents continue to advocate for clearer regulations to prevent similar disruptions and protect both pets and neighborhood quality of life.
