With the Fourth of July approaching, veterinarians are encouraging pet owners to prepare early for fireworks-related anxiety. If a pet has shown fear during recent thunderstorms, it may also react negatively to fireworks. Because Veterinary appointments and anxiety-related prescriptions can take time to obtain, experts recommend planning ahead.
Dr. Byron Maas of Bend Veterinary Clinic advises starting with non-medication approaches whenever possible. Pet owners can create a safe, quiet retreat for their animals, such as a dark room or enclosed space where they feel secure. Calming music, white noise, or fans can help mask the sound of fireworks and reduce stress.
Other options include anxiety-relief treats, calming wraps or “thunder shirts,” and specialized milk products designed to mimic calming maternal hormones. Medication may be considered if these methods are insufficient. For pets with severe anxiety, some owners may choose to travel to quieter locations during holiday celebrations. The key message is to prepare early and explore solutions before fireworks season arrives.
