The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has awarded nearly $1.4 million in grants to Michigan State University (MSU) and the Michigan FFA Foundation to address Veterinary workforce shortages, particularly in rural communities. MSU will receive $900,000 to establish the Michigan Rural Veterinary Workforce Model, which focuses on career exposure, financial assistance, mentorship, and professional development.

The initiative will connect Veterinary students with rural practices while helping early-career professionals manage student debt, practice ownership costs, and professional isolation. The Michigan FFA Foundation will receive $492,633 to expand Veterinary science education through teacher training, classroom resource kits, enhanced student competitions, and a dedicated Veterinary career track at its annual conference.

These investments aim to attract and retain more Veterinary professionals in underserved communities, strengthen animal health services, and protect Michigan’s agricultural industry. The programs also support broader efforts to develop the next generation of agricultural professionals statewide.
