As thousands of fans attend World Cup matches in North Texas, specially trained “vapor wake” detection dogs are playing a critical role in stadium security. Unlike traditional explosive-detection dogs, vapor wake K-9s can detect trace amounts of explosive materials on people moving through crowded areas, including those carrying explosives in backpacks, purses, or concealed devices. One such dog, Arlo, works alongside Arlington Fire Department bomb technician Manuel Carrillo, weaving through crowds to identify potential threats in real time.
Arlington currently has 14 vapor wake dogs, with additional explosive-detection K-9 teams from agencies such as the FBI and ATF assisting during the World Cup. These dogs are also trained to detect flares and fireworks, helping prevent prohibited items from entering stadiums. Their work begins well before fans arrive, including comprehensive sweeps of venues and ongoing screening of people, vehicles, and supplies. Together, these highly trained K-9 teams provide an important layer of protection for World Cup spectators.
