The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine has broken ground on a $94 million Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at its New Bolton Center large-animal campus. The 63,000-square-foot facility will combine New Bolton Center’s diagnostic laboratory with the Pennsylvania Equine Toxicology Research Laboratory, expanding testing, research, and collaboration capabilities.
New Bolton Center’s laboratory performed more than 279,000 diagnostic tests last year, while the equine toxicology laboratory typically analyzes 30,000 samples annually from six Pennsylvania racetracks. Both programs have outgrown their existing facilities.
The new laboratory will strengthen the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System, a four-laboratory network supporting animal disease detection and prevention. During the 2025-2026 fiscal year, the system tested 669,788 animal specimens for diseases including avian influenza, rabies, chronic wasting disease, and equine herpesvirus. State officials said the investment will strengthen animal health, public health, food safety, agriculture, and Pennsylvania’s ability to respond rapidly to emerging disease threats.
