The decision to undergo knee replacement surgery is challenging for pet owners, given the financial burden and potential severe outcomes if the surgery fails. In the U.S., determining the best treatment for pets’ knee injuries is a common dilemma. To address this, five seniors from Texas A&M University’s Biomedical Engineering Department are developing an improved solution.
Their project, Rev Knee, introduces additional components to the typical knee implant design, allowing joints to rotate, flex, and bend without relying on ligaments, reducing surgical failure risk. The process begins with CT scans to recreate the patient’s knee structure, which is then 3D printed. Sponsored by Dr. Brian Saunders and guided by industry professionals, including DePuy Synthes, this initiative aims to enhance animal and human health outcomes.
