International Cat Care (iCatCare) has released new consensus guidelines for diagnosing and managing chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats. Published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, the 2026 guidelines represent a complete update of the International Society of Feline Medicine’s 2016 recommendations. Veterinary nephrology experts from around the world contributed to the guidance, which incorporates new developments involving CKD comorbidities, anesthesia, analgesia, and strategies for improving feline wellbeing through optimized home and Veterinary environments.
iCatCare also released Nursing the Cat with Chronic Kidney Disease, a companion resource designed for Veterinary nurses and technicians. It emphasizes team-based care, caregiver communication, and ongoing patient monitoring. In addition, a free Cat Carer Guide provides pet owners with information about CKD, symptoms to watch for, and resources for monitoring their cats at home. Together, the resources emphasize collaboration among veterinarians, Veterinary team members, and caregivers throughout CKD treatment.
