New Mexico Offers Loan Repayment to Recruit Veterinarians to Rural Communities

New Mexico is offering up to $80,000 in student loan repayment to veterinarians who commit to practicing in rural, frontier, and tribal communities for at least four years. The Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program aims to recruit and retain veterinarians who provide care for food-producing livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry. The initiative addresses a nationwide shortage of food animal veterinarians, a trend that a 2023 Johns Hopkins University report warned could threaten public health by weakening food safety and limiting the detection of infectious diseases.

According to Heather Romero, director of Financial Aid at the New Mexico Higher Education Department, rural areas often struggle to attract veterinarians due to geographic isolation, high student debt, and demanding on-call responsibilities. Since the program launched, eight veterinarians have received awards, and the state hopes to fund 10 recipients annually. Applications for the current funding cycle are open through August 1.
