New Report Calls for Action to Increase Pet-Inclusive Housing

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) has released its Pet-Inclusive Housing Report, outlining strategies to make rental housing more accessible to people with pets. The report grew out of HABRI’s Spring Policy Forum, which brought together experts in housing policy, research, animal welfare, pet care, Animal Health, and human social services.

Participants examined approaches already being used in the United States and internationally, including greater transparency in leasing policies, pet deposit assistance programs, and reductions in breed and weight restrictions. The discussions focused on developing practical, evidence-based solutions that recognize the human health benefits associated with pets while addressing barriers renters face.

The forum also led to the creation of the Pets and Families Housing Coalition, which will advocate for pet-inclusive housing policies at the local, state, and federal levels. HABRI’s report is supported by several organizations, including APPA, WPA, AVMA, Mars, PetSmart Charities, and Zoetis.
