A new surgical mentorship center in Carrollton, Texas, is helping address the nationwide Veterinary shortage by providing hands on training for recent graduates. The Dr. Barbara Craig Surgical Mentorship Center, created through a collaboration between Operation Kindness Humane Society and Mission Pet Health, is expected to train more than 300 new veterinarians each year while providing surgical care for approximately 10,000 pets annually. Leaders say many Veterinary graduates enter practice with limited surgical experience, and the program is designed to build confidence through mentorship, advanced surgical instruction, and real world experience.
The initiative also aims to improve access to Veterinary care as staffing shortages continue to affect shelters and access to care clinics nationwide. According to a recent study, more than 70% of animal shelters and access to care clinics report being understaffed. Organizers hope the Carrollton center will serve as a national model for strengthening the Veterinary workforce and expanding access to quality care for pets across the country.
