NOLA Cat Lounge in New Orleans has temporarily closed after several resident cats were diagnosed with ringworm, a common and treatable fungal infection. Owner Kelly Johnson-Hill said the business acted quickly to protect guests, employees, pets, and cats, removing affected animals and beginning extensive cleaning, sanitizing, and treatment.
The lounge plans to evaluate reopening after about a week. Staff members are working with rescue organizations and Veterinary professionals on treatment plans and may discard furniture, toys, and supplies that cannot be adequately disinfected. Johnson-Hill said future precautions could include additional sanitation measures and disposable shoe covers for visitors.
Recent guests are encouraged to watch themselves and their pets for skin irritation or hair loss and contact a physician or veterinarian if concerned. The closure is creating a financial setback for the newly opened business, which had drawn strong crowds since opening this spring.
