The North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA) reports continued growth in pet insurance adoption, with 7.6 million pets insured across the United States and Canada in 2025. The number of insured pets increased 9 percent in the United States and 3.9 percent in Canada compared to the previous year. Despite this growth, the organization says a significant protection gap remains, with only 4.27 percent of U.S. pets and 3.72 percent of Canadian pets covered by insurance.
Coverage is also less common for cats than dogs in both countries. NAPHIA’s report found that the most common insurance claims involve routine conditions such as gastrointestinal issues, ear infections, skin diseases, allergies, dental disease, urinary tract infections, anxiety, and kidney disease rather than catastrophic emergencies. The association says these everyday health problems demonstrate the value of pet insurance in helping families manage Veterinary expenses and avoid difficult financial decisions when pets require medical treatment.
