Veterinary clinics across North Alabama came together to protect animals during severe flash flooding caused by a storm system that dropped 3 to 7 inches of rain across Madison County. As rising waters threatened the Winchester Road Animal Hospital near Huntsville, staff quickly organized an emergency evacuation of seven boarded pets. The animals were safely transferred to nearby Chase Animal Hospital, whose staff offered space and assistance after receiving a call for help.
According to veterinary staff, the evacuated pets handled the move well and quickly settled into their temporary accommodations. Horses at the Winchester facility remained safe, and officials have contingency plans in place should future weather conditions worsen.
The response highlighted the strong collaboration within the local veterinary community. Clinics from Madison to Athens coordinated resources, including kennel space, crates, and supplies, to support affected facilities.
While floodwaters have receded, cleanup efforts continue. Winchester Road Animal Hospital remained closed temporarily to assess water damage, primarily in its kennel area, and expects to resume normal operations once repairs and evaluations are complete.
