A 2026 survey from Spot Pet Insurance suggests pets increasingly influence major decisions involving housing, relationships, finances, and long-term planning. The survey included 3,600 U.S. dog and cat owners ages 18 to 64.
Fifty-eight percent said their pet’s needs carried as much weight as their own when choosing a home, while 75% would reject an otherwise ideal property that prohibited their pet. Relationships are also affected, with 83% saying a pet’s persistent negative reaction to a new romantic partner could influence the relationship’s future.
Financial considerations extend well beyond everyday pet expenses. Forty-two percent would delay retirement by two to five years to afford premium care for an aging pet, while 41% plan to include provisions for their pets in estate planning.
Travel decisions are also influenced by pets, with 53% either planning trips around them or spending significantly on premium boarding or pet-sitting services while traveling.
