The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) has established Veterinary pharmacy as its 17th specialty certification program, creating a formal pathway for pharmacists to demonstrate expertise in medication use for nonhuman animals. The designation recognizes the specialized knowledge required to address species-specific differences in drug absorption, metabolism, toxicity, formulations and dosing, as well as regulatory requirements. The decision followed a 765-page petition submitted by three Veterinary pharmacy organizations and supported by 17 letters, including one from the AVMA.
Supporters say certified Veterinary pharmacists can strengthen animal health and welfare, food safety, antimicrobial stewardship and public health while reducing medication errors and inappropriate substitutions. BPS is now recruiting licensed Veterinary pharmacists for its inaugural specialty council and as examination item writers, with applications due September 21. Up to 12 experts will serve on the council, while 20 to 40 will develop examination questions. The first veterinary pharmacy certification examination could be offered within two to three years.
