Pythiosis, a rare and often fatal fungal infection caused by Pythium insidiosum, has been reported in at least five dogs in Sarasota and Manatee Counties in the past month, with four cases proving fatal. The infection affects the skin or gastrointestinal tract of dogs, leading to sores, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and loss of appetite.

Veterinarian Dr. Morgan Pearl warns that Pythiosis is difficult to treat, especially if diagnosed late or located in areas where surgical removal isn’t possible. The infection spreads through contaminated or stagnant water, including floodwaters, swamps, and retention ponds. Manatee County resident Marisa Villars lost her dog, Millie, to the disease and urges pet owners to recognize early symptoms. While Dr. Pearl reassures that the condition remains rare, she advises keeping dogs away from potentially contaminated water sources to reduce risk. Early detection is crucial for treatment success.
