A two-year old giraffe named Zeyna at Safari West wildlife preserve in California recently underwent a rare, specialized procedure to treat painful hoof cysts that threatened her mobility and long-term health. Veterinary specialists and animal care staff collaborated to anesthetize the giraffe and remove the cysts, a complex process because giraffes face significant risks under anesthesia due to their unique anatomy and physiology. Advanced imaging and careful surgical planning helped the team successfully complete the procedure while minimizing complications.
Zeyna is recovering under close observation as veterinarians monitor healing and gradually return her to normal activity. The case highlights the specialized expertise required to provide advanced medical care for large exotic species and the importance of early intervention when mobility issues arise. Safari West officials hope the successful treatment will improve Zeyna’s quality of life and contribute to Veterinary knowledge about managing hoof disorders in giraffes and other large hoofed animals.
