Florida animal control officials have issued a warning about a scam targeting owners of lost pets. The Palm Beach County Department of Public Safety’s Animal Care and Control division (PBC ACC) reported that scammers are contacting pet owners, falsely claiming to have found their lost pets and demanding money for their return. These scammers often pose as shelter employees and request funds over the phone. PBC ACC emphasized that they never ask for money in this manner and urged pet owners not to share financial information with callers.

The warning highlights that individuals who share details about their missing pets online, especially on platforms like Nextdoor, Pawboost, and Petco Love Lost, are particularly vulnerable. The PBC ACC advises pet owners to use the county’s SNAP website for posting and checking on lost pets. Similar scams have been reported in other regions, including Wake County, North Carolina.
