Scientists at biotech company Kindred Companion Sciences have used CRISPR gene editing to create what may become the first truly hypoallergenic dogs by eliminating the primary protein responsible for most dog allergies. The researchers edited a gene that produces the Can f 1 allergen, then used cloning technology to produce two healthy beagles, Bailey and Alfie, born in 2024. Laboratory testing confirmed the dogs no longer produce detectable levels of the allergen in their saliva or fur, and a scientist with severe dog allergies was able to live with one of the dogs for more than a year without experiencing symptoms.
While the breakthrough offers hope for millions of allergy sufferers, researchers caution that additional studies are needed to confirm long-term safety and effectiveness across more breeds and people. Commercial availability remains years away, and some bioethicists have raised concerns that demand for gene edited pets could reduce adoption rates for dogs in shelters and rescues.
