A new study by the Clean Label Project found potentially concerning contaminants in nearly all 100 cat food products tested from 62 brands. Researchers detected lead in 99% of products, cadmium in 96%, and arsenic in 94%. Fish-based foods contained approximately 18 times more mercury than other varieties, while dry foods had roughly three times more lead than wet or air-dried alternatives.

Glyphosate, a common herbicide, appeared in 37% of products, with higher concentrations associated with additional plant ingredients. Plastic-related chemicals were also detected, particularly in canned and pouched foods. Although these findings raise concerns about long-term exposure, researchers emphasized that the study did not determine whether contaminant levels pose actual health risks to cats.

The report recommends rotating protein sources, examining ingredient lists carefully, and asking manufacturers about contaminant testing. Ultimately, providing cats with a complete, nutritious diet remains the most important priority for pet owners.
