One of the greatest challenges of owning an independent Veterinary practice is that you’re living inside it every day.
You arrive early, work through appointments, answer questions, solve staffing problems, return calls, review invoices, and somehow try to keep the business moving forward.
By the end of the day, who has the energy to step back and ask,
“How healthy is my practice really?”
The problem is that practices rarely drift off course overnight.
Instead, they change slowly.
A little more white space appears in the appointment book.
A staff member is late more often than they should be.
An associate forgets to run blood work on a senior patient with 10% weight loss.
Protocols begin to slip.
None of these events seem dramatic on their own.
But over time they become accepted as “the way things are.”
That’s when a practice quietly begins operating below its true potential.
The Dimmer Switch Syndrome
I call this The Dimmer Switch Syndrome.
Imagine someone slowly turning down the lights in a room—just one little turn of the knob each day.
Because the change is so gradual, your eyes adjust.
You don’t notice the room getting darker.
Then someone walks in from outside and immediately says,
“Why is it so dark in here?”
They see what you’ve stopped seeing.
Practice ownership works the same way.
Gradual declines in performance become familiar.
Familiar becomes normal.
Normal becomes accepted.
Before long, you’re managing a practice that is functioning below its potential without even realizing it.
Not because you’re a poor owner.
Simply because you’ve adapted to the gradual change.
Turning the Lights Back On
The first step is awareness.
The second is measurement.
This is where Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) become so valuable.
Think of them the same way you think about laboratory reference ranges.
When blood work falls inside the normal range, you’re reassured.
When values fall outside the reference interval, you investigate.
Practice KPIs work exactly the same way.
They tell you what’s healthy…
and what deserves your attention.
Without KPIs, you’re flying an aircraft without an instrument panel.
With them, you can make small course corrections long before small problems become major ones.
I often encourage owners to simply confront the facts.
Not confrontation in the emotional sense.
Just observe what is actually happening.
Good decisions always begin with accurate observation.
The Value of a Second Set of Eyes
Even with great data, every owner benefits from another perspective.
Practice ownership can be surprisingly lonely.
You’re expected to have the answers while carrying the responsibility for your team, your patients, your clients, and your family.
Sometimes what you need isn’t another seminar.
You simply need someone experienced to walk through the practice with fresh eyes.
Someone who can say,
“Here’s what’s working.”
“Here’s what’s slipping.”
“And here’s what I’d fix first.”
Often, the biggest improvements come from solving problems that have been sitting in plain sight for months.
From Good to Great
The best independent practices didn’t become exceptional by accident.
Their owners made a decision.
They refused to settle for “good enough.”
They kept improving, measuring, adjusting, and learning.
Most importantly, they remained open to outside perspectives.
Because greatness isn’t built through perfection.
It’s built through continual improvement.
Keep fighting the daily battle against drift.
Keep turning the lights back up.
Your practice—and your team—deserve it.
Action Items
1. Decide
Choose to move your practice from good to great. Every meaningful improvement begins with a decision.
2. Measure
Track a small group of meaningful KPIs and review them consistently. What gets measured gets improved.
3. Confront the Facts
Observe your practice objectively. Look for the “outpoints” that have quietly become accepted as normal.
4. Find a Second Set of Eyes
Ask someone you trust to look at your practice from the outside. A fresh perspective often reveals opportunities that are impossible to see from within.
5. Be Proud
Independent practice ownership isn’t easy. You’re building something valuable for your clients, your patients, your team, and your community. Never lose sight of that.
