A therapy dog named Kenobi is making a meaningful impact at UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center, bringing comfort and support to patients and staff. The 125-pound Leonberger, trained and handled by Gail Stieglitz, is part of the hospital’s pet therapy program. Inspired by her own experience with a therapy dog during cancer treatment, Stieglitz trained Kenobi from a young age to calmly navigate hospital environments and interact with people.
Kenobi’s presence helps patients in both emotional and physical ways. Stroke patients, for example, are often motivated to regain movement by reaching out to pet him, marking important steps in their recovery. Staff members also benefit, finding stress relief during difficult days. Observations show that patients’ heart rates can decrease during visits, highlighting the calming effect of therapy dogs.
Kenobi is one of several therapy dogs in the program, all of whom contribute to a supportive, healing atmosphere for patients, staff, and visitors alike.
