Certuma, a startup founded by entrepreneur Martin Varsavsky, is aiming to build the first FDA-approved AI doctor capable of diagnosing and prescribing treatments. Varsavsky argues that while many people already use AI for medical advice, these systems stop short of taking action due to regulatory limits. Certuma seeks to address physician shortages, especially in underserved areas, by targeting common, low-risk conditions with standardized treatments.
However, significant challenges remain. Ensuring patient safety is critical, as inaccurate AI decisions could cause harm. The company is developing safeguards, including deterministic systems and physician oversight, to reduce risks. Regulatory approval is another major hurdle, as the FDA has not yet established a clear pathway for approving AI as a full “doctor.”
Despite these obstacles, Varsavsky believes AI could eventually outperform human doctors in certain tasks. If successful, Certuma could transform healthcare access, though achieving approval will require time, funding, and extensive clinical validation.
