Colorado State University has been selected as a partner institution in the new PetSmart Charities Veterinary Fellowship, which supports Veterinary students pursuing careers in community medicine and expanding access to Veterinary care.
CSU’s first fellows are third-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students Crystal Mateo Mendez, Sage Farrow, and Lupita Rodriguez. The fellowship provides financial assistance, mentorship, leadership training, professional development, and continued support as participants enter practice.
All three students have demonstrated commitments to serving communities facing barriers to Veterinary care. Rodriguez helps lead FETCH, a student-run CSU initiative providing care and education through community clinics, and hopes to establish an affordable nonprofit Veterinary clinic in her California hometown. Farrow’s childhood experiences with financial barriers to pet care inspired her interest in community medicine, while Mateo Mendez hopes to give back to communities through accessible care.
CSU officials say the fellowship will strengthen the pipeline of veterinarians prepared for community medicine careers.
