Two raccoons have tested positive for rabies in Kings Park, New York, resulting in exposure to two people and two dogs. The incidents occurred on consecutive days, Sept. 28 and 29, when each raccoon encountered a dog outside separate residences. One person at each home was also exposed.
State health officials confirmed the positive rabies tests on Oct. 1. Both exposed individuals received post-exposure treatment. The dogs, which were already vaccinated against rabies, received booster vaccinations from their veterinarians.
The cases represent the 50th and 51st confirmed terrestrial rabies cases in Suffolk County since February 2025. During 2026 alone, the county has recorded 32 cases, including 31 raccoons and one cat. That represents a significant increase from the 10 cases reported by the same point last year. Meanwhile, neighboring Nassau County has confirmed one rabid animal, a raccoon, so far in 2026.
