The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that the U.S. hog and pig inventory totaled 73.7 million head as of June 1, 2026, a slight decline from both June 2025 and March 2026. Of the total inventory, 67.8 million were market hogs and 5.88 million were breeding animals. Despite the modest decline in overall numbers, production remained stable, with producers weaning 33.5 million pigs between March and May, slightly more than during the same period last year.
The average litter size reached 11.87 pigs per litter. Producers also expect to farrow 2.90 million sows from June through August and 2.89 million from September through November, indicating relatively steady production plans. Iowa continued to lead the nation with 24.7 million hogs, followed by Minnesota with 9.3 million and North Carolina with 7.2 million. The quarterly report is based on responses from 4,254 swine producers nationwide.
