Veterinarians from South Mountain Equine veterinary clinic brought a “stuffy ER” to The Great Frederick Fair in Maryland, repairing children’s damaged stuffed animals while educating families about horses and Veterinary medicine.
Dr. Justin Sobota created the event to draw visitors toward the fair’s horse area, which can receive less foot traffic than other attractions. Children could watch veterinarians repair their toys while learning about suturing, animal care, and the equipment used by equine veterinarians.
Among the participants was 14-year-old Jordyn Kane, whose sentimental stuffed bunny was repaired by Dr. Brooke Alnwick. Her 12-year-old brother, Patrick, brought a favorite stuffed panda for repairs.
Sobota also used the event to highlight the longstanding connection between people and horses. He said interacting with and caring for horses can provide enjoyment, purpose, and emotional benefits. Programs involving horses have also helped veterans and people with disabilities find connection, direction, and peace.
