Veterinarians are warning dog owners to avoid sharing pumpkin spice treats with their pets this fall because these seasonal foods can contain potentially dangerous ingredients. While plain pumpkin can be safe for dogs, pumpkin spice desserts and drinks may contain chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts, xylitol, caffeine, nutmeg, and other harmful ingredients. Foods high in fat and sugar can also cause gastrointestinal problems or pancreatitis.
Dr. Lori Ross, medical director of Emergency Veterinary Care Centers, recommends acting quickly if a dog consumes a potentially toxic food. Owners should determine what the dog ate, how much was consumed, and when it happened, then contact a veterinarian or emergency Veterinary hospital rather than waiting for symptoms.
Dogs can still enjoy safer seasonal foods. Ross recommends plain pumpkin purée, cooked sweet potato, apple slices with the seeds and core removed, and plain carrots. These treats should be offered in moderation without replacing a balanced diet.
