A Winnipeg pet rescue, Save A Dog Network, has issued a warning about a potential parvovirus outbreak in Manitoba, with dozens of cases reported. The virus, highly contagious and often deadly, has been affecting puppies, especially in northern regions where access to Veterinary care is limited. Founder Katie Powell expressed concern over the severity of this strain, noting that many puppies die before reaching medical care. Veterinarian Nour Eissa from Kenaston Veterinary Hospital confirmed several cases, raising concerns of an outbreak, though the province does not track parvovirus cases.
Manitoba is collaborating with Veterinary organizations to train laypeople in remote communities to administer vaccines, aiming to prevent future outbreaks. While there is no cure for parvovirus, intensive supportive care is needed to help affected dogs, but the cost can be burdensome for pet owners and rescues. Pet owners are urged to ensure their dogs are vaccinated to prevent infection.
